Facilitating medical refills at the age of drones

Technology has proven to be powerful in enhancing the quality of life of everyone, including the elderly. Challenges around acceptance of innovative tools and technologies remain amongst the most important risks of adoption failure. This study looks into the acceptance of usage of drones to facilitate access to medical refills for the elderly. The intent is to allow easy access and independence, especially when mobility becomes challenging.

Specifically, this study involves two parts:

  • Understanding the perception of the elderly population of the adoption of drones through considering different factors that could affect their behavioral intention of use.
  • Looking into the acceptance of pharmacies and pharmacists of a process of medical refills dispatched by drones.

The overall aim of this study is to produce a model that is designed for Qatar specifically, which could potentially be applied elsewhere. A prototype of a mobile application that manages the drones itineraries, and refills orders is tested with elderly and pharmacists to determine intent of use and acceptance. A survey was also distributed to assess acceptance.

The study concludes whether such a model can enhance the lifestyle of the elderly population as well as the efficiency of the dispatching process for both the pharmacists and the elderly population.
